A Child is Born

I am holding this perfectly formed, beautiful boy.  His fingers are tiny but his little legs are long
like his dad's.

Not accustomed to holding babies, I was relieved to return him to the arms of his mother,  As I
held him I realized he is totally dependent upon the care of others.

In this perception I saw little Liam as a preamble to the Christmas story.

The generosity of God's love for us can be found in the birth of Jesus Christ.  First, in loving us
God takes a great risk, a risk we experience when we love others.  It is the risk of being hurt or
rejected.  It is the risk that our love will not be returned.  God's love for us and God's trust in us is
seen most poignantly in the birth of the child in the stable at Bethlehem.  Jesus could have come
as a powerful king or a wealthy man or a warrior king.  Instead, He came as a tiny vulnerable
baby.  He entered the world the same way we enter the world, like Liam, totally dependent upon
the care of others.

How generous and trusting God is.

Merry Christmas!

May the Lord give you peace.

Fr. Jim
Last Saturday night amidst the snow storm my nephew, Michael, and his wife, Krissy, rushed to
Good Samaritan Hospital as the baby that was due January 2, 2010 was about to arrive.  Krissy
gave birth to Liam Michael at 9:00 P.M. December 19th.

I went to visit last Tuesday and Krissy asked me if I wanted to hold Liam.
