"Stay with Us Lord"

The Beginnning of Mass
THE ENTRANCE PROCESSION

The entrance procession is meant to be the gathering of God’s people as a community of worship.  It is
a visible expression of the people becoming a liturgical community.  The focus is on God, not on
ourselves.  We gather to worship God and to thank God for His many blessings.  Eucharist means
“thanksgiving.”
THE SIGN OF THE CROSS:

Romano Guardini, a noted German theologian of the 19th century wrote: “When we cross ourselves,
let it be with a real sign of the cross…let us make a large, unhurried sign, from forehead to breast,
from shoulder to shoulder, consciously feeling how it includes the whole of us…It is the holiest of
signs.”
THE GREETING:

The greeting by the priest is much more than the sentiments of “Good Morning.”  It is a wish that we
who have gathered for Mass may experience the presence and the power of Christ in this gathered
community.
THE PENITENTIAL RITE:

We prepare to celebrate Mass by calling to mind our need for the forgiveness and the
healing of Jesus.  There are several forms of the Penitential Rite including the Confiteor
and calling on God’s mercy three times.  This is not an examination of conscience as one
would do in preparing to celebrate the Sacrament of Penance.  In this Penitential Rite we
place our trust in Jesus and His mercy.  Because of who Jesus is as the Prince of Peace
and the Son of God, we have confidence in calling upon His mercy.  We proclaim God as
loving, kind, and the source of all healing and reconciliation.
THE GLORIA:

The Gloria is said or sung on Sundays and major feast days.  It was originally used as an
Easter hymn at dawn.  The Gloria expresses our praise of God at the beginning of the Mass.
THE OPENING PRAYER:

This is called: “The Collect” because in this prayer the priest gathers the needs and desires of
the people after the moment of silence.  The congregation is seated after the Opening Prayer.
